As some of you have seen in the trading post I'm considering getting a conversion kit for my XCR to 7.62x39. What is the overall consensus of the XCR in this caliber? I love my XCR in 5.56 right now, accurate and reliable, but I want something with a little more umph behind it at all ranges. Maximum distance that I intend to use the 7.62x39 platform for is 500M. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

      Mags may be a problem.

I have had no probs with mags in mine.  In fact, I have had no probs except for user error(ran it w/o lube the other day and trigger started sticking).

I love the caliber as well.  Cheap ammo, hits hard, fairly accurate.

500m??  I don't think so.  All stats I have heard and read, x39 tends to fizzle out beyond 300m.  It's not made for ranges beyond that.  This calibre is designed for fights closer than 200m.  This is where it is most effective.  Hits hard, knocks the target down with one shot.  Ask any of our boys who have been hit by it, with or w/o body armor.

Yeah, if you want to do 500m with the XCR-L, get the 6.8 kit; probably with the 18" barrel.  7.62x39 is nice to shoot in the XCR, but a long range round it ain't.

I'm not too interested in selling my 5.56 kit as of the moment. I have a have a ton of mags, ammo, and soon to be reloading equipment that kind of prevents me from dropping 5.56 and gearing for 7.62x39. Just too many projects and not enough money... Sad

As far as target engagement distances, 5.56 wouldn't do so hot at 500M either right? Considering the ballistics, would 7.62x39 do any better (terminal effects that is) than 5.56 at distances between 300 - 500M? I would be most interested in things like 6.8 and 6.5G, but these are just not standard rounds. I feel more comfortable knowing, if I absolutely had to, I could find ammo in the field. Also all my buddies stock 5.56 and 7.62R.

5.56 will certainly get there better than 7.62x39, but I'm not sure about the effectiveness at that range.  With an 18" barrel and the right rounds it might be ok, but that's probably not going to be a common loading.  You could look at it from the standpoint of using 6.8 and being able to carry just the barrel, bolt and some empty mags to be able to switch to found 5.56.

Although, it really sounds like you're looking more for a .308.  If you want something that is definitely effective at 500m and a pretty common round that is.

As far as target engagement distances, 5.56 wouldn't do so
